handleMessage() resets the state only when an error message is already on the bus. When the state change fails before the streaming thread posts its error, the pipeline was released in PAUSED with streaming threads still running, which logs 'Trying to dispose element ... but it is in PAUSED instead of the NULL state' and can crash the process.
