In debug builds, we assert and abort to give more useful crashes for
development (i.e., instead of triggering UB). Otherwise, we get the
optimization benefits of `unreachable()` (or the older
platform-specific fallbacks per `cm/utility`).
Move some target related enumeration types from `cmStateTypes.h` to a
new header, as these really aren't "state" types. Also, make
`TargetType` a strongly-typed enumeration.
Add new diagnostic categories CMD_POLICY and CMD_EXPERIMENTAL, both as
children of CMD_AUTHOR. Use the former when issuing policy warnings. Use
the latter when issuing experimental feature warnings.
Modify `cmInstallGenerator` to have a `cmDiagnosticContext` instead of
just a `cmListFileBacktrace`. Create helpers to obtain a state capture
that includes `CMD_INSTALL_ABSOLUTE_DESTINATION`. Modify most subclasses
(namely, ones that have a `DESTINATION`) to use this new state capture.
This fixes a limitation identified when 39a56136a3 (Diagnostic: Add warn
or error on absolute install paths, 2026-03-25) added the aforementioned
diagnostic, that the install generator(s) no longer have access to the
diagnostic state as of the `install` invocation which ultimately caused
the diagnostic if that scope is not the top-most scope of the current
subdirectory.
Note that some of the generators which capture context have not actually
implemented the diagnostic yet.
Fix most snake_case identifiers in cmInstall* to use camelCase instead.
Also, update clang-tidy configuration to help with applying these
changes, though the relevant check remains off by default.
Add `-Winstall-absolute-destination` diagnostic to warn or
error when an install command has an absolute destination.
This allow projects to enforce the best practice of not allowing
absolute install DESTINATIONS.
Find places that are currently relying on diagnostic-specific message
types to issue diagnostics and replace these with calls to the new
diagnostic methods.
CMake historically has forced an `objects[-<CONFIG>]/<TARGET_NAME>`
subdirectory under an `OBJECT` library installation's `OBJECTS
DESTINATION` which may be unwanted. Support skipping this component
with a target property.
Run the `clang-format.bash` script to update all our C and C++ code to a
new style defined by `.clang-format`, now with "east const" enforcement.
Use `clang-format` version 18.

Issue: #26123
`include-what-you-use` diagnostics, in practice, are specific to
the environment's compiler and standard library. Update includes
to satisfy IWYU for our CI job under Debian 12.
Since commit cf82300a63 (BinUtils: Clarify search logic and make it more
consistent, 2021-05-27, v3.21.0-rc1~119^2~2) we prefer `llvm-strip` over
`strip` when using Clang. However, since commit 20291e8e72 (install:
Fix stripping on macOS, 2019-01-30, v3.14.0-rc1~31^2) on macOS we add
flags `-u -r`, needed by Apple's `strip` for executables, but that
`llvm-strip` does not need or support. Improve the condition to add
Apple-specific flags only when the selected `strip` tool is Apple's.
Note that Apple dylibs must be stripped with `-x` with either Apple's
`strip` or `llvm-strip`.

These files are symlinks to the real binaries, and we already apply
tweaks to those. Previously we generated installation tweak code
guarded by a `NOT IS_SYMLINK` condition that is never true. Drop the
code altogether.
Add a test covering the motivating use case, in which a `POST_BUILD`
step modifies the namelink file to not actually be a symlink.
Fixes: #24647
With builds that have many internal library directories or many
external libraries, rpaths can be quite large. The cost of calling
install_name_tool thousands of times can add up to minutes on a build,
especially if virus scanning software is there to help you out. With
this change, instead of deleting and then re-adding an rpath, we ignore
it. Likewise we batch all the rpath adjustment calls into a single command.
Before, installing SCALE (some libraries have 70+ build-time RPATHs that
get deleted, plus up to a dozen external RPATHs from upstream
dependencies that should remain in the binary) would take almost 9
minutes on my laptop, and after this change the installation takes only
30 second.
In a per-component installation the generated installation scripts
are invoked once for each component.
Per default custom installation script code added by install(CODE|SCRIPT)
only runs for one specific component in this context.
The new ALL_COMPONENTS option allows custom script code to be run once
for each component being installed.
cmGeneratorExpression::Evaluate is a shortcut when only the evaluated string is
needed or an instance of cmCompiledGeneratorExpression cannot be cached.
Fixes: #19686
This patch is generated by a python script that uses regular expressions to
search for string concatenation patterns of the kind
```
std::string str = <ARG0>;
str += <ARG1>;
str += <ARG2>;
...
```
and replaces them with a single `cmStrCat` call
```
std::string str = cmStrCat(<ARG0>, <ARG1>, <ARG2>, ...);
```
If any `<ARGX>` is itself a concatenated string of the kind
```
a + b + c + ...;
```
then `<ARGX>` is split into multiple arguments for the `cmStrCat` call.
If there's a sequence of literals in the `<ARGX>`, then all literals in the
sequence are concatenated and merged into a single literal argument for
the `cmStrCat` call.
Single character strings are converted to single char arguments for
the `cmStrCat` call.
`std::to_string(...)` wrappings are removed from `cmStrCat` arguments,
because it supports numeric types as well as string types.
`arg.substr(x)` arguments to `cmStrCat` are replaced with
`cm::string_view(arg).substr(x)`
Enables the clang-tidy test performance-inefficient-string-concatenation
and replaces all inefficient string concatenations with `cmStrCat`.
Closes: #19555
An old workaround for `std::allocator_traits<>::value_type` lints from
IWYU on `std::vector<>` usage breaks IWYU's handling of `<memory>`.
Convert the workaround to use the same approach we already use for a
workaround of `std::__decay_and_strip<>::::__type` lints. Then update
the `<memory>` inclusions to follow the now-correct IWYU lints.
On some platforms, e.g. most ELF-based ones, RPATHs may contain keywords
that match CMake's variable syntax. To prevent them from being falsely
substituted when running the cmake_install.cmake script CMake syntax
needs to be escaped.
This is preparation for an upcoming merge request, which will add
a new cmInstallGenerator that returns false if there are errors in
the Compute() step.
